ORM Addresses the Lifecycle of Risk

From initial risk assessment through to the analysis of post-flight risk assessment data. To be effective and embraced by end users, ORM must be applicable to the operator’s dynamic environment; it must also be agile enough to support in-flight decision-making and yet robust enough to gather meaningful data to support strategic risk analysis and management efforts (pro-active/predictive risk management).

Finding and Addressing Hazards

In this course, we teach operators techniques to help them identify hazards in their operations and operational environment (even those hazards they’ve become hardened to). We walk them through the steps to quantify those hazards as risk factors and how to reflect those risks in a meaningful FRAT (Flight Risk Assessment Tool) format that sticks with the crew beyond pre-flight planning and becomes a viable in-flight methodology that helps them identify and manage new and emerging risks during their flight.  The tools we present further support post-flight risk data gathering. We teach the audience how to use the data to identify trends or at-risk behaviors and use the analysis to develop effective risk management strategies.

After participating in the one-day event, students can:

1.  Educate their organizational leadership in their roles and responsibilities towards establishing and maturing their risk management strategies.

2.  Understand and demonstrate the characteristics of an effective risk manager and how the position integrates into an organization’s administrative structure.

3.  Develop a simple but effective risk assessment tool for their mission sets after identifying hazards and risk trends at the local level.

4.  Employ Operational Risk Management principles beyond the planning stage and instill the necessary mindsets to use safety as a tool to get the job done.

5.  Conduct follow-on trend analysis to support changes in policy, training, or equipment acquisition.

6.  Understand the processes to provide relevant feedback following incident and mishap investigation.
